For the Salt Paper Series, artist Erika Dufour took pages from the self-help book, “Positivity” and immersed them in a salt water bath, then baked the pages until they were delicately encrusted in salt. The effect is to give the pages the look of an archaic artifact found in an ancient ruin, similar to how we now look at archaeological finds from ancient civilizations.
Similar to her Burnt Book Series, Erika altered pages from self-help books as a way of examining our relationship to ourselves, and our false expectations of grandeur, happiness, and how we are there for each other through hardships. This series and this particular book on positivity points towards the unrealistic expectations for people to gloss over their problems and suppress their pain.
